Mobile blogging with WordPress

mobile bloggingAs a blogger, I find mobile blogging applications to be a nice companion when I get a writing assignment while on the go. The security of being able to update the website or blog on an instant is nice. But mobile blogging comes with its drawbacks. The first challenge that mobile blogging presents is that you are unable to create complex posts. Assignments that require charts, multiple photos and other things can make blogging seem like a never ending and tedious task. However, these aren’t the only challenges.

Mobile blogging can also create other challenges. The route of a good or bad blogging experience is at the mercy of our device. It is obvious that blogging from an iPad, for instance, would be a better blogging experience than blogging from a Blackberry device. The small screen of certain devices make it a bothersome task. Also, bloggers aren’t able to easily transfer photos. It can also be very demanding to still keep up with other work. All of these challenges make the whole task useless, resulting in not getting much work done.

What about blogging from a mobile device, called moblogging? At first blush, this sounds ideal — you’re in the middle of Yellowstone Park, or at the top of the Eiffel Tower, and you dash off a quick blog entry from your phone, the ultimate convenience in sharing your thoughts with the world. But once you start thinking about it, doesn’t it seem excessively painful to enter text using a numeric keypad for input?

I know that millions of teenagers send gazillions of characters of SMS text to each other using only a numeric keypad, but comparing text messaging to blog entries is not really fair. SMS messages are short by necessity, and the people that use them have developed a fairly elaborate shorthand which speeds up input. Blog entries, on the other hand, tend to be real prose, with real sentences and in many cases multiple paragraphs per blog entry. (Oracle)

It is not fair, however, to put mobile blogging in such a bad light. There are solutions available that can make mobile blogging, complex mobile blogging, an uncomplicated, if not enjoyable experience. Today’s technologies, in the form of plug-ins and applications, allow bloggers to add photos, create posts and even multitask to emailing easily. Below, we have outlined multiple applications (iPhone, BlackBerry and Android) including plug-ins to help you on your quest of mobile blogging.

Postie Plugin for WordPress

Emailing is a complicated invention. Mind you, it’s easy to use, but the use of it is sort of out there to be predicted. Emailing, at one time, was considered such a hot invention. Then after a while, social networking and texting seemed to make it wash away out of view into the ocean of the Internet world. However, Postie for WordPress may bring more uses to your email account.

Postie allows WordPress users to add a plug-in to posts from email. You may be thinking, you are already able to post without a plug-in from your email. Postie is sort of different, a good type of different. Postie does things that your email wishes it could do. Postie for WordPress is able to set categories, include pictures and even videos. All you need is an Imap or pop3 email!

WordPress for iPhone

iphone wordpress app

There is nothing better than the original! The WordPress application for the iPhone is one of my favourite iPhone applications for blogging. I guess I can say the reason behind that is partially because most blogs I contribute for use WordPress. However, WordPress for iPhone ranks high on my list because of its quality. The application allows users to create, edit and post all from the application. This obviously isn’t what makes it amazing.

WordPress for iPhone also allows bloggers to reply, control and edit comments on their posts. The application also allows users to add links, photos and check their spelling from the application. Want to document a trip? Why not let everyone know where the post was composed? WordPress helps with this by allowing bloggers to add location to their posts. This is definitely an application all WordPress bloggers should have – no question!

iBlogger for iPhone

This application was actually my first blogging application. iBlogger is an application that allows users to post to multiple blog websites. iBlogger can support WordPress, Blogger, TypePad and many more! The application allows you to do the average tasks including posting photos, selecting categories, tags, signatures and many other tasks.

This may not be one of the best blogging applications out there, I really only used it for about three weeks before giving it up. But it does the job, I really enjoy the support for multiple blogging websites as well. This means that if you want to de-clutter your app windows and have a place to update your personal Blogger website along with your more public WordPress blog, then this may be right for you!

WordPress for Android

I may not be an active Android user, but I have heard some good reviews about the WordPress for Android application. The application comes with the quality that you expect from an official application. The application does many of the basic tasks that you expect a blogging application to do.

You are able to edit both your “.com” and hosted WordPress accounts straight from the application while on the go. Along with this, the application also allows you to edit Pages. For WordPress users, this is the best you’ll get in terms of WordPress blogging. There are other options, including WPToGo, but the quality doesn’t compare!

BBMetaBlog for Blackberry

This is a semi well known blogging application. The application allows bloggers to not only post to WordPress, but also to other blogs. Actually, its blogging engine allows bloggers to post from the application to any blog. While it is a nice platform, it is sort of a drag to edit posts, categories and tags. Because of this, I also offer the recommended option of also checking out WordPress for Blackberry. But all in all, it’s a good quality blogging application for BlackBerry users.
