A Showcase of Beautiful & Functional Footers

Footers are often neglected when it comes to web design – all too often they’re the last thing that’s thought of, the bit that no-one really looks at. But for designers with a keen attention to detail, designers that want absolutely everything to be perfect, the footer is just as important as the rest of the design.

We’ve selected some sites that make sure their footers get just as much love as the rest of the page, and ensure that they help visitors get to where they need to go.

Carsonified

Carsonified keeps their footer simple, with just their address, contact details, Twitter button and their hosting icon – but it’s all done so beautifully. The different sections are portioned off and each element is given space to breath with some much needed padding. It’s clear, simple and beautiful.

Tapbots

Tapbots, the makers of a number of iPhone apps, doesn’t hide it’s footer away – they actively draw attention to it using interesting and creative illustrated characters. The footer is useful too, providing easy access to their “about us” page, blog, support page and Twitter profile.

Teixido

Teixido is a branding and web/interface studio with a beautifully designed site – and even the footer is shown some love. The yellow of the footer ribbon is kept in keeping with a number of the other elements on the site, helping the footer to fit in while at the same time stand out. Useful links are included and the last tweet from the company account is also displayed, so the company’s personality is always on display.

Jason Santa Maria

World renowned designer Jason Santa Maria has, as you may expect, a beautiful, usable and interesting footer. While it includes a brief background on Jason, it also includes a search bar, links to some of his latest projects, social media links and even some recommended reading. Even though a lot of information is provided, it’s all so beautifully laid out that it doesn’t appear cluttered – everything is given it’s own space.

Mojo Themes

Mojo Themes uses their footer to increase newsletter signups, but it does so in a fun way using their site’s mascot. Mojo almost has two footers – one for useful navigational links such as their categories, and useful guides for buyers and sellers of their themes, and a second for the less important terms & conditions and contact details. These two footers are clearly differentiated with contrasting background colours and different font sizes, but the newsletter signup section stands out by spanning both footers.

Tom Bryan keeps his footer simple, clean and useful with large social media buttons that have been styled to match the overall design of the page.

An Event Apart

An Event Apart highlights the footer with a bright yellow background – it remains useful with the typical footer links you’d expect, but it doesn’t hide them away – it actively draws attention to them. The footer is also beautifully connected to the remainder of the design by the overlapping “An Event Apart” banner, a design decision that looks and feels right.

Bristol Archive Records

Bristol Archive Records, a record label based in the UK, uses a grunge inspired background image to draw attention to its footer. Links to the label’s flickr, myspace and iTunes pages all fit the theme by being filled white, which makes them stand out against the silhouette of the bridge in the background.
